Lori: "Portland just wants to be Seattle. All the stores and clubs in Portland are just copies of stores and clubs in Seattle, only not quite as good."

Tammy: "That's bull."

Lori: "No it isn't."

Tammy: "Yes it is!"

Lori: "Is not either!"

Tammy: "Lori, shut up!"

Unidentified girl, also in cat-eye sunglasses, multilayer clothes, and short messy hair: "You guys, it's just like San Fransisco and L.A. It's not a question of better. Both places are great, just different."

Lori: "No, it's not like that! Portland is not different from Seattle, Portland wants to be Seattle. Seattle is like the cool senior and Portland is the wannabe sophomore."

Tammy: "Then how come you're going to school in Portland, dink, huh, if Seattle is so freakin' great? I'll tell you why, it's because yes, Portland is like Seattle. A smaller, more concentrated, better, more finely honed version of Seattle."

Lori: "Yeah, that's how come so many great bands and movies come out of here, huh?"

Portland? Seriously beautiful city. You can see Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens (Though when it blew, even though you could hear it in BC, you couldn't hear it in Portland. The sound travelled the wrong way. A waiter told me that. The top of the mountain is gone. Crazy.) The city is clean and beautiful and full of trees and coffee.

Turns out that I like Seattle too. Or I think I do, I was in and out of there so fast that it was hard to get the flavour of the place. (Good coffee though.) What I did like about Seattle was the people. All the people. 21 hours in Seattle and I didn't meet a single person who wasn't a fine example of human expression.
