I do not know what level if any you have played in soccer but there is one underlying premise for a coach from U-7 to the Premierships. Respect is EARNED not GIVEN. If the coach is viewed as arbitrary, inconsistent, breaks his own rules, says one thing then does another, I don't care if he is GOD, there is no respect to be given by anyone to that individual. I do not personally know all he has done in the past but the players all seem to tell the same story when you ask them and that is it is his way or the highway and that is not how it should be. A good coach listens to his players, gets a feeling for what is and has happened, makes his punishment fit the actions of his players and is consistent with his punitive measures. Read the posts from the last two weeks and it becomes painfully apparent that that seems to not have happened. I am not saying a coach should cave in or molley coddle his players but when the players start to blow him off, you have a real problem not an imagined one. The fact that the ownership will not step into try to figure it out and reach conclusion says volumes. The fact that the ownership will not be an aribiter and hear both sides speaks volumes. We are talking about team integrity, ownership integrity, and public perception. The Morris's are due a lot of credit as they have continued to support this team through thin and thin. There pockets are getting shallow and without the fans, they are in a world of hurt. They seem to love soccer as they have been to every game I have been to in the alst two years and that includes Alex. They are approachable to fans and very personable but how much do they really know about running an A League franchise. They do a lot of coomunity good work and their players have rebuilt flagging soccer programs in the metro area and have built ones that were just starting. They can sell the team if they want to but for one problem. Without major sponsorships, this team will not survive and most people in Indianpolis know that. Do you see any MAJOR SPONSORS ON THE BLAST STADIUM FENCE. Simply put, NO! NO FORDS, CHEVYS, Chrysler, HONDA, TOYOTA, DODGE, LILLY, USA GROUP, BANC ONE, OR ANY OTHER MAJOR CORPORATE SPONSORS. The one Bank is a limited partnership. The rest of the sponsors are small businesses who are digging down and trying to make this go. Look at the Premierships of England, Germany, and the rest of the European countries and see who sponsors them with big bucks. Nike just bought the sponsorship for Manchester United for some outrageous dollar amount that would run this franchise for the next fifty years and that is just for England. NASCAR has aponsorship dollars that would send you entire immediate family to any college of your choice for up to eight years for just one car but this is A League. Yes we have IU, Notre Dame, even little Butler and they have decent to national caliber programs but this is the A League, one step below MLS. Hell, MLS sponsors last years lost over 60 million dollars and how much longer will that go on and this is the feeder system to the MLS. Going back to the original post and premise. Coaches are sacked all the time in England and Germany who know the game but the players have no respect for them. When the fans sense that, the rug comes out and the coaches are shown the door. Get the picture Bella? If you do not, I do not know how much more can be said to present it to you any other way. This is not the MLS or the European Premierships. This is A League where there is a very fine balance between, fan, ownership, and coach relationships. When one or two are severly out of wack as is the case here, you have a major problem. In America you like to say, "Give me respect" In Rurope we like to say, "I will give you the respect I feel you deserve." You are correct that players can go play elsewhere and some already have and more will probably do so both this year and in those that may remain to come. It does not alleviate the problem or the image, it just drives a larger wedge between coaches, patrons, and ownership. Fact of life, not opinion. Lived with it for 26 years and it hasn't changed, not even today. Most of these guys are working one or two other jobs to play soccer here. This is not their main livlihood and they are making practically nothing to stay here. They are only asking for consitency, punishment based on the act commited, and a decent chance to have their time on the pitch to show what they can do. When the coach keeps bringing in one new face after another and you do not know if you will play this week, next week, or the week after, or at all this year, you get really frustrated. Then you have to put up with what happened this last two weeks and you really get pissed. Best take another and closer look. All is not well in OZ no matter what a friend of yours may be telling you on the team or as a public supporter. gforever
