Honestly, I'm not entirely sure. However, from what I've been reading in the papers it's more of a political roadblock than a financial one concerning the Pier 40 site. Not to change the subject, but did anyone catch the Liverpool/Roma match in Fenway? The pitch looked short and narrow, but it seemed to me that the playing surface was pretty good considering the rapid transformation and alteration. The announcers also had a great view from on top of the Green Monster. Back on topic: I have never been to NY, but I get the impression that there is not much green space within the city for a stadium. I think putting it on that pier would be an engineering nightmare. I think a soccer stadium would look great in the middle of Central Park! (Yeah, I hate heavily populated urban centers. I am not sure how I would get there if I could not drive my car.)

I was raised on Long Island, I remember taking the Port Washington line right to Shea Stadium(now Citi something).

I don't know if this new MLS Stadium would be in the area, but if it is located near the new Mets home, that would be very convenient for sports fans to attend either. Could almost make a sports complex of it.

yes, it will be located right next to the US Tennis Stadium complex in Flushing Meadow. Which is within walking distance of CitiField the semi-new home of the NY Mets.

This from Making the Case for a Soccer Stadium in Queens’ Flushing Meadows Corona Park on Total Footblog: However, despite the popularity of the Cosmos brand locally, nationally, and internationally, MLS has repeatedly claimed that there are other potential bidders. So it is possible - given the estimated cost of acquiring both the stadium and the franchise – that the Cosmos could join forces with another interested party. Either way, the league said that it could announce a tenant for the stadium – and the 20th MLS franchise – as early as March 2013. Earlier in the article, Dobens writes that (if all goes according to plan) groundbreaking will be sometime in 2014 and the stadium will be ready for occupation in 2016 or 2017. If the "tenant" turns out to be a team called the Cosmos, then that would mean they would have to announce their plans to enter the MLS before ever playing a single match in the NASL. Nothing wrong with that, but if the Cosmos are supposed to "lead the NASL" (as one of the news articles post earlier suggests) such an announcement would soften just a leadership role. And if it is the Cosmos who will be the tenant, would they have to wait until the 2016 or 2017 season to move up to the MLS? After playing five seasons at Hofstra....
