I understand, SB.

I do agree the officiating has not kept up with the level of play, but it really isn't as far behind as some think.

Young officials do not understand the importance of arriving at the field ready to go. They are (and should be) more concerned about learning how to be a referee on the field first. The appearance thing bothers me, too, but it is not high on my priority list.

Parents and coaches need to remember these are young boys/girls/men/women trying to learn a new job. You can't yell at them.
Imagine being 14 or 15 and having every customer yell/complain/huff and puff at you for the littlest of things you do wrong.

Parents and coaches can't forget that it is just a game.
The players aren't going to remember or care about the officiating the next day (or even later that night). It is always the parents who bring up the subject.

The complaining and yelling by parents and coaches goes against the letter of the laws and the spirit, too.

The biggest asshole on a rec league team I play on is an inveterate referee bitcher. His excuse for doing this is "you don't yell at the referee so the call he just made goes your way, you do it so the next one goes your way."

Which makes me want to punch him, but whatever. I'm sure he learned it from his father.

That's why you don't yell at a ref. You talk to them, but yelling ensures the latter call doesn't go your way.

I guess my thinking has always been that we pay the referee so we can all just shut up and play a game, but I'm not a very competitive person.

CL, You would have to agree that there are a lot of bad refs at all levels out there.

Hairygump, your teammate needs to get with the times. That may have worked many years ago, but it doesn't (and shouldn't) work now.
KJ, you're right. You are going to be more productive simply talking to the referee. However, it also depends upon how you talk to them.
Coldfuse, yes, that's was a good first video/podcast.
SB, there are some referees at all levels that have their struggles. However, I think your definition of "bad" is going to be different than mine.

I see/hear a lot of people complain the officials we have had for the Stars games. They really haven't been that bad. Remember, one or two calls that you don't agree with does not make a bad referee.

I think the overall level has gotten better, but there have been some really bad refs out there too. Not just one or two calls but lots of bad calls usually both for & against the home team. Typically it goes both ways. But overall I think the ref quality has gone up this year & last over previous years. I'm guessing the league is putting a greater focus on ref quality.

Notice we don't (or rarely) yell "USL Rules" for the number of handballs anymore. And not just because it's the NASL. More obvious handballs are getting called than pre-D2/USL/NASL chaos, at least at the D2 level, as an example.

...and we're supporters. We're pretty much exempt from the rules of refereeing. laugh
