The matchup will conjure memories of a 6-4 RSL overtime loss at Minnesota in the Open Cup in 2005, the team’s inaugural season, in which current coach Jason Kreis scored three times but came away disgusted at his team giving away the lead three times — including in the final minute of regulation.

"Ten years in the league," he said at the time, "it’s as low as I’ve ever been."

Think of how awesome the banner would have been...

"it's as low as I've ever been."

I'm getting $580 for a 24 hour turnaround to SLC.

I am really upset the game was moved, I already had like 5 people from work ready to come to their first game.

I'm upset but if this is the concession which needs to be made to keep the team going for another year so be it.

If I was an Atlanta supporter I'd try to get as many people with me to boycott the next home game and watch it from the parking lot streamed. I feel almost more gutted for them, growing a strong base for a terrible team and the carpet being pulled out.

RSL can buy their way out of a trip to MN, but they can't buy a win...

Come on you STAARS!!!

Pros:

  • Save $12,000 in hosting fee to USSF
  • Make some undisclosed sum of money from sale to RSL

Cons:
  • Extra mid-week travel for the team
  • Lost marketing opportunity from hosting MLS team
  • Pissed off fans
  • Lost competitive advantage
  • Diminished chances of winning $1,000,000 USOC prize and a spot in the 2013 CONCACAF CL

Granted, it is unlikely that the team would have won the tournament, but this is a wasted opportunity. There is no way RSL paid them enough. And it's not like this deal will make or break the team either way. It is a short term cash grab.

Open note to the Stars: skip the USOC next year and you'll save even more money.

I agree, and they would have made money with ticket sales here.

Have the Stars/Thunder ever made any money hosting an Open Cup game? I would be surprised if even some of the well attended games actually had a positive effect. If RSL paid travel costs and some extra to lower the overall losses I think it makes it a little easier on the operators to justify running the team one more year.

I'm extremely disappointed that the game won't be here and I don't totally understand the rationale because I don't know the details. However, I don't think it is necessarily clear cut that this was the wrong decision.
