Decided to give this a separate thread. http://www.insidemnsoccer.com/2011/11/29...or-2012-season/http://nscminnesota.com/2011/11/stars-exercise-18-contract-options/This is, by the way, the earliest this club, as either the Stars or Thunder, has made this kind of announcement. A good sign, I think. However, there are questions that remain. There are five names that remain unaccounted for from this past season's roster. Joe Warren. Is it truly over? After all, his girls haven't seen him win the US Open Cup yet. Kevin Friedland. Are his playing days over? With all the work he has done coaching and in the front office, combined with injury struggles over the past few years, is it time for him to devote all his energies behind the scenes? Daniel Wasson. When his contract was renegotiated at the tail end of last season, did it include the upcoming one as well? Luke Mulholland and Anthony Hamilton. The two late-season signings were important pieces of our playoff and championship push. If Hamilton is available, will we sign him? If Mulholland isn't signed by MLS, can we bring him back? As noted elsewhere, Scott Lorenz, the mid-season loan from Sporting KC and key defender for the '10 Stars, was released by MLS. Anyone think he should be brought back? And as for the list of players picked up, long-time followers of the club know that picking up an option doesn't mean that the player involved will be with the team by the time next season rolls around, even if uninjured. Jack Stewart, for instance. Loaned to FC Dallas in mid-season. Will Dallas want him back? If so, by picking up his option, the Stars will compel Dallas to give up something (probably cash) for him. Is that the plan? If Dallas decides not to buy his rights, will the club keep him or attempt to move him elsewhere? And finally, has the club made the right choices so far? Who else, if anyone, would you have released? Who do you think might might have been a mistake to let go? For instance, Geison is currently second in the MISL in scoring. Are we possibly, like the Thunder did with Thiago Martins, a Brazilian forward released by the Thunder in 2002 who, in 2003 for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds went on to score 22 goals and win the A-League MVP award, making a mistake and giving up too early on him? Questions galore, methinks. "Any answers?" inquires That little old jersey collector Me

Here's the only answer I have: http://www.insidemnsoccer.com/2011/11/29...2-roster-moves/Which means: Let the speculation continue! The team exercises their options, but the players still have to agree, and some of the rumors I've heard don't match with the current list...

One rumor I heard was that Brian Kallman was going to propose to his long-time girlfriend. I am happy to report that this has, in fact, happened and she accepted. I do not know the date of the wedding.
I also heard Joe Warren was going to retire, but I've heard that one before.

There's an odd but interesting story on Woods which I'm trying to figure out how to write about. That's all I will say at this point is he will not be back and is in the UK. I also very much wonder if he will even come back to the states to try to play. I doubt it.
Also, as to Mulholland, the issue with him is the same as it is with Barbara. Being a foreigner is a great disadvantage to getting picked up by an MLS team unless they think you are pretty special and can play and make a difference for them. In other words, the rules make it tougher and they are not looking to bring in too many foreign players as development players. But it does happen as we saw with Wayne Rooney's brother and the Red Bulls last year. It is possible that Mulholland could end up here again but it's probably a long shot. It was a short term contract with him and Hamilton until the end of the season and I'm guessing if he doesn't catch on with an MLS team there is a team that has more money than the Stars that will be willing to fork over the cash for the young man.

I do not know the date of the wedding. Thank you for the info on Kallman. I see him over at the soccer dome in Stillwater--Daughter #1 is playing in the same league as the team he coaches for Woodbury. (It is interesting to watch Kallman in the role of a coach. He does a really good job.)

Are they hot rumors? Hot and juicy rumors, perhaps? Mebbe hot, juicy and spicy rumors, even? Okay, I lied. I haven't heard any good rumors, just direct conversation with various players... Unfortunately for this discussion, the information was told in confidence, so there's nothing I can share at this point. Oh wait, I did hear a rumor that Altman might have to return his Captain Altman banner to us...

I'm hearing Kyle Altman is trialing with the San Jose Earthquakes. I need to follow up on this but it sounds as if he's been out there since last week and so far has been showing well for himself. I'm hearing there are quite a few new guys training in camp that they are taking a look at.
Also, Jack Stewart was training with FC Dallas and has a partial tear of his hamstring and calf right near his meniscus but is recovering well and should be back in a week. He did miss the teams trip to Mexico.

Not sure exactly what you're referring to, but while they're both MLS teams, it has been TWO different teams he's trialed for; Portland last fall and San Jose currently. Yup, different team. Evidently he was not invited back to Portland. That doesn't mean he didn't do well. Just not what they were looking for in a CB at this point and time. http://www.insidemnsoccer.com/2011/12/02...rtland-timbers/My understanding is Manny has history with John Doyle with the Earthquakes. Between Kyle's agent, Manny and Doyle they were able to give him a look.

Grrrr, you're right. They are two different teams, aren't they? I somehow still had Portland on my mind for the current tryout (hoping, I suppose). Actually, I would prefer Earthquakes over Timbers, so good luck Kyle!

I heard some rumblings that some signings will be announced soon...
In other news, I stopped by to see Nessy yesterday. The main stadium field has little snow on it.

Here is an interesting article I noticed this AM on former Stars GK Louis Crayton. It is too bad that his career with the Stars ended after only 40 minutes or so and resulted in the re-birth of Joe Warren. I sure hope he teaches his young and rising stars never to put the ball on the ground after making a save! Article on Louis Crayton

JJE- told it very nicely.
Crayton tried to juke around an attacking forward at the top of the 18 and kicked the ball while being slide tackled and tore the ACL.
It was a disaster...and exactly the type of move that got him cut from DC United.
It was sad, but man was it a weird blessing to have Papa Joe back.

In the first season of the Stars, Joe came out of retirement to back up Louis Crayton who had, if I remember correctly, just finished a stint with DC United. He had some local connections to the Liberian community which is how he latched on with the Stars. Anyway, near the end of the first half of the first game of the season in Vancouver, Louis tore his ACL trying to clear the ball. Joe came in and that was that. I spent some time this AM trying to find the video highlights of the match, but I was unsuccessful. It looks like the Whitecaps no longer have it on their You Tube channel. The one thing I will never forget about that match is the poor camera work when Joe was getting ready to come in. He was bending over to stretch out and the cameraman was right behind him zooming in on his butt. I will never forget the collective, "Hmm, there is Joe's butt" while watching the match at the Sweety.

Instead he will be signed by the Minnesota Stars. We will see... He might not want to come up, we gave him a pretty hard time last year in game one vs the Strikers early in the season. I remember him waving his finger at us on the east side after scoring the goal to tie it up against us late in the game. I'm not going to say which finger it was he was waving. He is a strong player and at least he did not drop on all fours, lift his leg and pee on us like another player who later joined our team after playing for California. We all came to love him as one of our own once he scored a few goals for our team.

Did the interview with Manny this afternoon. I thought I had decent enough questions, the rapport was good as was the technology failure. I'm really bummed. We will try again next week.
Manny is off for the West coast to spend some time with Portland and San Jose to take a look at some players and talk about possible player loans to the Stars.

Roster leak! Not yet announced by the Stars. If you scroll down to the Canadian U-23 preliminary roster in the following link, you'll notice one of them is from the Stars. http://www.socceramerica.com/article/46001/us-rivals-begins-final-preparations.html"Not surprising to me. The CSA had Janssen tagged as a member of the Stars squad in their press release yesterday when they picked their final team for CONCACAF qualifying. Since the Stars "STILL" don't have a 2012 roster page up I contacted the FO. Janssen IS NOT a member of the Stars team. Not sure where that information came from but it's a pretty bad mistake to make at the National Team level. Get your ducks in a row CSA.

Here's what I've figured out so far. Let me know if there are any changes; I'm assuming this isn't completely right.
2012 Roster Moves
"Officially on roster" Kyle Altman option retained Simone Bracalello option retained Justin Davis option retained Devin Del Do option retained Cristiano Dias option retained Neil Hlavaty option retained Brian Kallman option retained Andy Lorei option retained Gino Mauro option retained Lucas Rodriguez option retained Kentaro Takada option retained, signed new contract extension Matt VanOekel option retained Amani Walker option retained Kevin Friedland new contract Daniel Wasson new contract
Edi Buro new signing Miguel Ibarra new signing Martin Nunez new signing
Andrei Gotsmanov option retained, yet to report to camp (3/16) Jeff Cosgriff option retained, yet to report to camp (3/16)
"Officially off roster" Jack Stewart traded to Ft Lauderdale Joe Warren retired Brian Cvilikas option retained, retired Ely Allen option retained, released
Chris Clements option not retained John Gilkerson option not retained Sandy Gbandi option not retained Geison Moura option not retained Tino Nunez option not retained
Ryan Woods “left the Stars camp before the final championship playoff series and flew back to England” Anthony Hamilton contract not renewed Luke Mulholland signed with FC Tampa Bay
I'll leave the trialists to uhclem

Pretty close.
I can report from an unimpeachable source that Jeff Cosgriff has retired from professional soccer and has taken a position with a computer firm on the West Coast.
Loved the team, loved the fans, had a great time. But he took an internship with a company who offered him a permanent position with good money and great opportunities for the future. And he got a bit homesick.
He thanks everyone for their support and will always be a Blue.
Rumors about Gotsmanov, too, from a normally very reliable source. Unfortunately, I can't independantly verify so I'm not at liberty to repeat.
"If anyone hears any trialist names not mentioned in this thread, toss them my way." requests

Roster leak or another administration error? From the NASL's official website: http://www.nasl.com/index.php?id=2&lastletter=CWhile there are some new players missing and quite a few former players still on it, I still find it interesting that trialist Shawn Chin should be listed with a number, 15. And if you click his name, you'll find that they have switched his team listing from FC Edmonton to Minnesota Stars FC on his individual listing. An article on our new GK with an interesting bit of info, if true... http://www.ougrizzlies.com/sports/m-soccer/spec-rel/040312aaa.htmlThe interesting line is the last one (caps mine), "At Minnesota, Hildebrandt will be one of THREE goalkeepers competing for the starting job, which recently opened up following the retirement of long-time net-minder Joe Warren." "This shapes up to be the biggest battle for the starting keeper job since Papa Joe and Jon Lowery in 2002," thinks That little old jersey collector Me "Gary Bailey had to choose tonight to miss out on saving that." It's a college article so I wouldn't put too much stock in the 3 goalkeepers. Not saying they might not sign someone eventually but I'm thinking we could end up with a loan keeper from an MLS team this season. Not saying I know this by any means. But it's sort of an educated hunch I have.
It's pretty public that the Stars will announce today three sort-of-kind-of veteran signings. Chin is one of them. He missed the Edmonton scrimmage on Monday to go home and pack his stuff and head to MN.
The other two are Chris Cortez formerly of Chivas USA: never saw much play time and was released in February.
The other is a Minnesotan who actually did get some MLS experience but failed to make a mark, Fuard Ibrahim. Originally signed by FC Dallas as the youngest signing ever by an MLS team (17 I think) who then went to Toronto FC where he lingered. He's only 20 or 21 so this could be a really good/safe spot for him to rebuild his career.

My guess is there will be a goalkeeper announced today. The Stars site says, "The team will also announce three more additions on Wednesday."

OK,well, I just listed 3. Chin, Cortez and Ibrahim. Actually I'm not sure Cortez is the one they will announce. Might still be looking at him.
Has Connor Tobin been announced yet? I think they may sign him as well. He made 17 appearances for the Rhinos last season. We definitely need some depth defensively.
I guess we will just have to wait for the press release today.

Of course you are correct. Forgot about Freddy. Just thought thats what I heard once.
Main point still being, the kid is only 20 and has logged in a fair amount of time in MLS games. He could certainly be a contributer to this team. He's back home and the pressure is off him somewhat. Time to rebuild the career.

That is cool to read about Ibrahim, so with him and Kallman Nessie will have two Minnesotans on the squad? Any word on what Gotsmonav is gonna be doing? Is he overseas? Retired?

After smashing the PK over the net Saturday night, Neil Hlavaty will be leaving the Stars...and joining the Minnesota Vikings as the new placekicker for the 2012-13 season. I am heading of the the NSC right now to confirm these reports.

I wore my Cameroon jersey to the FO one day, not knowing we had anyone trialing from there. He was so excited - luckily someone was there to translate, as Ernest doesn't speak much English (approximately 2 phrases) and my little Spanish is much too slow to converse. I haven't seen much of him on the pitch, and probably shouldn't trust the rumors I heard; maybe next week I should go watch a practice...

This is a pretty big squad, now, with adding another defender and another forward. It's exciting. http://www.nasl.com/index.php?id=3&newsid=2046

I think a new sequel to those Jim Varney movies is in order:

Not on roster yet, http://journalstar.com/sports/local/coll...f60b8075f7.htmlbut trialing for us and scoring against Des Moines. "Any further info on the line-up that played the Menace would be appreciated" prods That little old jersey collector Me "Well, it's Ipswitch 0, Liverpool 2, and if that's the way the score stays then you've got to fancy Liverpool to win." - Peter Jones, BBC Sports Radio
