LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Mohamed bin Hammam has asked sport’s highest court to overturn the life ban imposed by FIFA for alleged election bribery.

http://www.sacbee.com/2011/11/21/4071218/bin-hammam-appeals-to-cas-against.html

The Court of Arbitration for Sport said Monday it has registered bin Hammam's appeal. No date has been set for the hearing.

Bin Hammam will seek a verdict by next May, when the Asian Football Confederation would be legally bound to replace him as president by electing a new leader.

Bin Hammam then said on Twitter that he would proceed to CAS "where from now on I will be equal to my rival."

Damian Collins, the U.K. member of parliament who is a leading advocate for reform at FIFA, discusses the bribe-for-votes scandal and its implications.

Q- With the handing down of bans and fines on 10 more Caribbean Football Union officials on Friday, does FIFA see this scandal as over?

A- FIFA should not believe that this is the end of the scandal. What we have seen is the investigation of some very specific allegations relating to the FIFA Presidential elections. And there may be more to come. There has not been a wider investigation into allegations of wrongdoing involving FIFA executives relating to the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

Q- What’s the latest on Mohamed bin Hammam’s appeal? Do you think he’ll win?

A- Whatever the result of this appeal, I think there should be a broader investigation into his work within FIFA, and in particular surrounding the World Cup bids.

Soccer: Shameful silence of Fifa's sponsors

At the World Cup finals in South Africa last year you could hardly move for the corporate messages that bombarded every level of your consciousness until you were waking in the middle of the night with the tune from the Coca-Cola television commercial playing in your head.

The credibility of Blatter's regime is shot to bits. From the fallout from the ISL collapse to the vote for Qatar to host the 2022 World Cup and on to his uncontested Fifa presidency election, the organisation has gone beyond parody. Or, as Rio Ferdinand put it, Fifa has become "sitcom material".

In Brazil in 2014, will Fifa's partners ignore all this as they project more images of joyous supporters and 3D tellies? Or is someone going to tell them that, in the current climate, they stand out like a middle-aged divorcee at a Katy Perry gig? That if they want to reflect the fan experience - the phrase is unpleasant, but it is the language they understand - then they need to get with the programme and effect change.

When I rang Adidas, the woman in the press office thanked me for "reaching out" and then, when I suggested we had a chat about Blatter, kept repeating to me that if I provided my email address she would send a statement.

With their Lionel Messi/Derrick Rose ads, adidas portray themselves as the preferred choice of the cool kids in the schoolyard. They should never be associated with anything as lame as ducking a straight question. One can only imagine that, in private, Fifa's global partners are saying exactly the same about Blatter as the rest of us. They should say the same in public and see what happens. I can guarantee they would like the reaction.

This is great stuff JW7. However, you will never get me to wear Puma as I love my Adidas. We are safe on beer, I have never enjoyed Bud, never seen an Emirates jet in person (I fly Delta) and my doctor made me give up McDonald's.

ROSEAU, Dominica (CMC) — Former president of the Dominica Football Association (DFA), Patrick John, has indicated that he is in the process of appealing a FIFA decision to ban him for a period of two years...

John, who was elected to serve another four-year term earlier this year, was not found in violation of Article 10 of the Code of Ethics which is accepting gifts and other benefits. He was also not found guilty of infringement of Article 11 of the FIFA Code of Ethics, which is accepting a bribe or gift of US$40,000.

I am of the impression it is more a "suggestion."

ZURICH — FIFA appointed Swiss anti-corruption expert Mark Pieth on Wednesday to lead the reform of soccer’s world governing body following a series of scandals.

The University of Basel professor, will outline the scope of his expert panel’s work at a news conference next week, FIFA said.

FIFA has said up to 18 members of Pieth’s team would be identified on Dec. 17 after an executive meeting in Tokyo.

Pieth has taken a role that Blatter initially suggested might be filled by former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.
