I remember swimming that UK afternoon, and the pool emptied as someone announced that a plane had hit a tower in New York. Everyone dried off, dressed and gathered around the lone tv screen to witness the 2nd plane hit, then followed a day of images that seemed to be right out of Die hard film. I honestly expected to see Bruce Willis walk out of the rubble in his trademark vest.
I will not watch any of the anniversary programming, I saw the images that horrific day, images that will never leave my mind, images that do not spend a single day letting me be grateful for the first responders, people who rushed into buildings that a sane person would be desperate to run away from with every ounce of energy they possessed.
Thank you to those brave people who risk their lives to save others, they are truly the people who we should all aspire to be, not the crassly overpaid athletes or film stars that fill our tv screens now.
