I went to a DC United match a few years ago against Cruz Azul and had a great time. My opinion is that RFK Stadium is in terrible shape and a renovation is not an option. However, the location for the stadium is great-with the sole expecetion that it is located inside the District.
I think the next best option would be for a new stadium near the Waterfront area, or Navy Yard--not to far away from the Nationals ballpark. Having lived in DC for a period of time, that area really turned around (to some extent) since the Nationals moved into the area.
I would be curious how a stadium location in the Greenbelt area would work. That would not necessarily be a central location. However, it is a better neighborhood that most in DC. If my memory serves me correctly, there is a huge green space near the Green Line stop that is also accessible to the Beltway.
The key is to place it near a Metro stop. The Metro stop near RFK is still a decent hike. However, if it is not near a Metro stop nobody will go because traffic is so terrible.
