The Charleston Battery welcomes the Richmond Kickers to Blackbaud Stadium Tuesday night for an American Division USL PRO fixture. The game is a rematch of the 2010 USL2 championship match that saw the Battery defeat Richmond by a score of two goals to one. Tuesday’s game is the 43rd all-time meeting between the two sides in the rivalry’s nineteen-year history and the series is deadlocked at 19-19-4!

The Battery (3-4-2) enters the game on the back of a 3-0 away loss versus the Wilmington Hammerheads in a game played on Saturday night.

Richmond have got off to a great start to the USL PRO season and are unbeaten through seven games with six wins and one tie. One of those wins came at the expense of the Battery as Richmond came from behind to earn a 2-1 home victory versus Charleston back on April 23.

Levi Coleman opened the scoring in that match with a 16th minute headed finish but second half goals from David Bulow and Shaka Bangura lifted the Kickers to victory.

The Battery played Richmond five times in 2010 winning three games and losing twice. All three Battery wins came in the games played at Blackbaud Stadium; this season Charleston plays Richmond just twice in the USL PRO regular season.

Richmond’s roster includes two ex-Charleston Battery players; forward Mike Burke played for Charleston in 1998 & 1999 scoring 9 goals and adding 10 assists in 37 games played. Midfielder Luke Vercollone played 66 games for the Battery in 2006 and 2007 scoring three goals with six assists.

Richmond head coach Leigh Cowlishaw has been with the Kickers since 1993 and was a member of the Kicker’s 1995 U.S. Open Cup winning side.

Two for Tuesday presented by the Sheraton North Charleston!

Just FYI, Burke is more or less retired this season (he says he is, the Kickers say he isn't smile ). I definitely wouldn't expect to see him down there

Going to be a tough one tonight. Lots of injuries on the Battery side. hope a few of them that didnt suit up Saturday are okay for tonight.

Missing Wilson is going to be tough too. Flatley will likely get his first start.

It's hard to believe he's 30 something now....we remember him before he could even shave! And I'll never forget when he was with you and had died his hair pink, I went to the Dollar General store and got a huge pink plastic beach totebag and got him to sign it after the match. He was a little leary but I talked him into it...he was a good sport about it. I think he washed the pink out shortly after that.

The match tonight is one of those times where we shouldn't win cause we have too many things going against us......but lady luck will roll the dice and we'll probably play our best game, score some goals and take the points. When you least expect it....good things happen.

I think it was about 30 seconds. They showed the clock at 42 but that was a little bit after the goal.

Yeeees! Goal in the 86/7 minute! Unfortunately I missed it, because I was looking at another page. And without the commentary, all I heard was the crowd cheering haha. Caught the backflip though. Sick!

I gotta say I'm surprised we gave Richmond its first loss after the way we've been playing lately. But who cares, that was awesome!

Prophet-like don't you think?

Last night was a typical classic between these 2...lots of hard tackles and a good struggle for 90'. It seemed we were finally playing with some passion and spirit I felt were missing in other home matches. The newspaper reported play was a bit ugly but I thought it was one of the more entertaining matches we've had this year. I thought the pace was pretty fast with both teams going end to end most of the night.....not as much of a midfield grinder as I thought it might be. Armstrong was particularly active and his 2 strong volley shots in the 1st half were the best long range efforts I've seen this year. Too bad 1 of them couldn't have gone in. After the first 30 second hiccup, some stout defending at times by our backline when we were pushing forward for the winner and a bit exposed. And credit to Richmond who were also pushing for the winner even in the final few minutes when they could have just sat back and gone home with a point. Some of the best tackling from both sides I've seen in awhile. A few were a bit overcooked but with these 2 clubs, that's to be expected. In about the 82' while standing in E10, I told my family "hey, let's start walking out so we can head down to the far end and see us score the winner". Another prophet like statement that came true....problem was, I was still under the stands when we scored and missed it! When I'm away from the action for any reason, we almost always score, thus keeping my mystic powers alive. Maybe that's why everyone around me is always telling me to leave? Hmmmmm. Anyway, hopefully, with the monkey off our backs, the boys will be a bit more relaxed now and winning one at the very end also helps the confidence, not to mention coming back from a rough start against a quality opponent. Onward and upward!!
