If you read the definition of any own goal per FIFA, if the ball is directed toward the net and deflected, it is not an own goal. Gerard's "goal," albiet at a hard angle, was directed toward the net. Therefore, it was not an own goal. I am not sure why the English have such a hard time understanding this.
