GARBER WANTS EXPANSION TO STOP AT 20 BUT WHO WILL BE #20?

Quote:
He also added that eventually MLS must eventually return south of D.C., with Atlanta a possibility.

“You can’t be a national league unless you have teams in the South..and I can't think of a better owner than Arthur Blank,'' said Garber

I've never seen anything stating what number of franchises that MLS was aiming for. Do you have a link to any other story on that topic?

While it would suck to be left in the cold if Atlanta's not #20, it does make good business sense to stop there, at least for a while.

We didn't help our chances with the attendance at the MLS Challenge Cup last wkend @ Kennesaw State. Beautiful weather, empty stadium!

Obviously the MLS knows more than I do. While Toronto and Seattle didn't exactly pack 'em in at A-League (D1) Level, the teams are doing tremendously at the box office at MLS level. Certainly that could happen for Atlanta as well.

I am not sure, however, I agree with Garber's overall premise that it's 'inconceivable' that the MLS will not be south of DC in the near future, though. Both Florida teams were a bust at the box office (even with good teams on the field). There were certain (stadium) factors that played into this, but I don't think the MLS 'has to be there' to be true major league - they have already established that they are.

If Atlanta jumps to the MLS, it will be after Montreal, the Impact will be joining next year as the 19th team.
Vancouver and Portland are already doing well at the gate!

MLS will never do well in Florida. There is simply too much else to do there, and whether WE like it or not, soccer is very much still a niche sport in the US. The NFL does well in Miami and Tampa. The NBA does well-ish in Miami and Orlando.. but look at MLB. MLB was very late getting into Florida and both the Marlins and the Ray have always had attendance issues. Miami couldn't even sell out a world series game a few years ago. The NHL can't draw flies down there either, except when they give tickets away. About the only cities in the south that are capable of supporting MLS are Atlanta, and possibly Charlotte. Nashville would be a possibility also.. but an iffy one.. at best.

I remember reading an article(a while back) that said that Miami sports have never sold out.
