They're going to have to show me, too, and I'm not even from Missouri.
So a reasonable person might conclude that a potentially-reborn USL-1 might have the following clubs next year:
Austin Aztex
Puerto Rico Islanders
FC New York
Orlando
That's it at the moment, right? Portland's gone to MLS in 2011. Others have cast their lots with the NASL, right?
They're going to need at least four or five more teams, and, to be honest, I'm not sure where they're going to come from.
I agree. of the "half dozen" potentential franchise that they are in "serious" talks with (to paraphrase Holt), let's say that they manage to bring half of them on board. That would actually be a bit amazing in my book but let's just say that they manage to pull it. That would leave them with seven. Again, after FCNY and even Boris, that juggernaut supposedly at the vanguard of the revolt that formed the NASL and his Silverbacks found that they were not ready to go when they originally thought that they would be. Just because you say that you will be ready to play in 2011 doesn't mean that they will be. But we all know that.
The USL might, in fact have to turn to Puerto Rico. They might not want to but they might not have much of a choice...
Last year, in the moments of desperation it was reported that the Puerto Rican federation was facilitating talks with at least two of the clubs in the PRSL: River Plate Puerto Rico and Sevilla FC.
Mirroring the USL, the PRSL has just experienced a similar revolt which has resulted into the formation of a new pro league league which has been sanctioned by the federation. And when I say "mirrors", I mean "mirrors". It is like they took the script south and put it in Spanish. It is downright erie how similar the two situations are in a lot of ways.
Now, RPPR (which had tried to get into the USL1 before but was bloacked by the Islanders and politely dismissed by Holt & Marcos) and Sevilla FC are left stranded with another club after the en mass defection of most of the other, now former PRSL clubs. Only one other club had remained with them.
For the purpose of maximizing travel, and in the desperation to save the division, they might have to seriously look at bringing one or both of those clubs in.
If they don't add any clubs west of Austin, then playing at least two clubs while down in PR could be more attrative for the remaining franchises. In the end, it would seem to be a very temporary type solution (I seriously doubt that even RPPR understands the type of expenses that are rquired to play in the division, even after Serralta personally has schooled their commander-in-chief. It is a huge jump in expenses for a USL2 side, let alone an Island based side...
