Atlanta, Georgia (Aug 27th, 2009) - NuRock Soccer Holdings LLC ("NuRock Soccer Holdings") today announced that it has acquired United Soccer Leagues ("USL") from NIKE. NuRock Soccer Holdings, based in Atlanta, is led by Rob Hoskins and Alec Papadakis. NuRock Soccer Holdings is currently a USL franchisee with a Premier Development League operation in Atlanta and rights to acquire two USL First Division teams in Atlanta, Georgia and Birmingham, Alabama marketplaces, respectively. http://www.oursportscentral.com/services/releases/?id=3894684

If the market the league, the other owners will probably be happy with that.
Any idea what the price paid was?

The other owners are NOT happy with the NuRock ownership. There was an end run done here by Nike, possibly the league as well.
However, your scenario would have been true with a number of organizations that made bids for the league. Perhaps you are correct BS, perhaps not a good idea. Then again, the people running the league have not owned teams and the owners of those teams are unhappy with them because they are not sympathetic to the issues they are having as team owners. So what's worse? Not being rhetorical here-I am truly asking a question.

The same people who have not been able to bring the marketing and technology to the level of the Blue Square Premier are suddenly going to develop a talent for innovative thinking because NuRock is taking over? I want to be wrong. Anyone more hopeful than I am should please tell me how wrong I am.

The other owners are NOT happy with the NuRock ownership. They should consider going on the record with their displeasure, then. By my count, there are 11 USL-1 owners (plus Tampa Bay and New York, I don't know how involved they are or if they even count yet). Vancouver and Portland are on their way out and up, so if they're not happy...oh, well. And Saputo has one foot out the door, too, so we're now down to eight potential pissed off owners. Of course Miami would be one IF Traffic was trying/hoping to buy the league. But who else? If, as I understood it, Nike (through what was Umbro) really held 100% of the stock (when did that happen? Didn't Marcos used to own a certain percentage, even though he sold the bulk of it years ago?), then it was up to Nike to decide to whom to sell. Not Rob Clark. Not Tony Bakker. Not Selby Wellman. Sorry about your luck.

You're assuming that "the same people" are going to continue to be in charge of the marketing and technology.
You don't know what changes are going to be made. None of us do.
I do know this: whoever owns USL and whoever owns a USL team has a tough time of it in the best of circumstances. A crap economy and some of your bellwether franchises leaving, to be replaced by some that have shown dubious organization skills themselves, may make the hard part even harder.
I think you have to look at two things: 1 - At some point, we have to admit that "the product" is responsible for some of the problems; and 2 - If you don't think that USL as an entity is more advanced and less clueless and disorganized than it was in 1999, you're either late to the party, dense, not very observant or not very bright.
But, of course, soccer fans want everything yesterday. I suppose I was making an assumption regarding who would be in charge of marketing and technology. Point taken. Let me rephrase: The fact that the people currently in charge will remain involved in some fashion does not fill me with hope and joy. I agree that it is a tough road in the best of circumstances, but I do expect more than I see. Better presentation and professionalism. A league website that is not wholly embarrassing for instance. I emphatically agree that the product is part of the problem. And as far as your last point goes, late to the party is the correct answer. I've never pretended otherwise. I started paying attention to the Thunder and by extension the USL last year. But hey, thanks for making yet another of your posts gratuitously negative. Always a pleasure.

Let me rephrase: The fact that the people currently in charge will remain involved in some fashion does not fill me with hope and joy. It's not a fact. It's an assumption. They might. They might not. I agree that it is a tough road in the best of circumstances, but I do expect more than I see. Better presentation and professionalism. A league website that is not wholly embarrassing for instance. And yet...this is about the best one they've ever had. What's embarrassing about this one? This league has been behind the curve on a lot of things for a lot of reasons (among them money and vision), but, again, if you're looking at it from the perspective of someone who just dropped in, I would invite you to have a longer view of the situation. And as far as your last point goes, late to the party is the correct answer. I've never pretended otherwise. I started paying attention to the Thunder and by extension the USL last year. But hey, thanks for making yet another of your posts gratuitously negative. Always a pleasure. We aim to please. Point being, your frame of reference is skewed if you don't have a working knowledge of where this organization has been and how much better organized it is than it was ten years ago. Feel free to either offer your abundant talents to make things better, though.

Feel free to either offer your abundant talents to make things better, though. When the old guard is quoted in the present tense in the press release I think it is closer to fact than assumption. What is embarrassing about the latest USL website? Is that irony? It is close to useless. Pick a conference team at random and there is a very good chance that their website will be more impressive. I do not need to take the long view to recognize functional obsolescence. My abundant talents! Now that was supposed to be irony, right Einstein? If only one could yawn and gag at the same time, that is precisely what I would do when reading your rapier wit.

Ohhhhhh, a Euro, or a Europoseur. I see now. Everything's better across the pond, says the guy from the tony white suburb of Minnesota. I gotcha. Thank you for completely devolving this thread into personal insults. Here, have the Preston McMurray award. I agree w/ Propes ... devolving threads are the bane of BigSoccer ... let's keep our posts pertinent. Especially personal comments about a person based upon their posted residence ... you have not (and I believe, neither have I) ever met the man. Take your spinner bait, and troll in some other waters.

I go to all the Atlanta Blackhawk games, where I had been told that there are "big plans." I kinda took it with a grain of salt as EVERYONE talks about their "big plans."
