PDL PIRANHAS CONTINUE WINNING STREAK OVER UNDEFEATED TEAMS
Midfielder Kevon Harris scores second straight game winning goal
Norfolk, Virginia b The Hampton Roads PDL Piranhas (3-2-2) defeated an unbeaten team for the second week in a row, downing the Reading Rage 1-0 Friday night at Virginia Wesleyan College. On June 12 the Piranhas outlasted the previously undefeated Virginia Legacy 2-1. Piranhasb midfielder and scoring leader Kevon Harris (5 goals, 10 points) scored the game winning goal in both matches.
Hampton Roads has now run their own unbeaten streak to five games going 3-0-2 since May 23 and earned their first shutout of the season Friday night. Reading (6-1-2), who sits atop the Mid-Atlantic Conference and is one of the PDLbs two highest scoring teams, has scored 26 goals in nine matches. This match marked the first time the Rage has failed to score this season.
The game was very defensive, physical but scoreless through 94 minutes. The Piranhasb back line was highly successful and goalkeeper Ben Newton made five impressive saves. Six yellow cards were issued, four to Hampton Roads and two to Reading. A total of 29 fouls were called, 14 on Hampton Roads and 13 on Reading. But the last foul called was the most important.
Harris was fouled outside the 18-yard box in stoppage time and the resulting free kick was hit low and hard and just underneath the diving Reading keeper Jeremy Vuolo into the lower left corner of the net. One minute later the final whistle blew. Vuolo is tied for first place in the PDL with five wins.
bThis was a good game between two very strong teams,b said Piranhasb head coach Jon Hall. bIt was a shame someone had to lose but I am thrilled we got the win.b
The PDL Piranhas play again at home on Sunday, June 21 vs. the Cary Clarets in the second half of a doubleheader with the Piranhas W-League side at Foster Field. Kickoff for the women against the Cary Lady Clarets is 5:30 p.m. followed by the men at 8 p.m. Gates open at 4:30 p.m.
