PDL PIRANHAS DROP SEASON OPENER TO CAROLINA 2-0

Piranhas also lose starting midfielder for season due to injury

Virginia Beach, Virginia b The Hampton Roads Piranhas menbs PDL squad dropped their delayed season opener 2-0 on a pair of last minute Carolina Dynamo goals Saturday night at Virginia Wesleyan College. They also lost midfielder/forward Shawn Edwards (Virginia Beach, VA/Landstown HS/Va. Wesleyan) for the season with a badly broken arm.

The fans at Trinder Center/Foster Field were treated to sustained action throughout the match but neither team could find the back of the net for the first 88 minutes. Thatbs when Dynamo defender Indy Smith found a cross from mid-fielder Zach Loyd and headed it past Piranha keeper Evan Newton for the gamebs first goal.

In stoppage time Edwards came down awkwardly after going up for a header and fell on his left arm fracturing his humorous. The game was delayed for more than 30 minutes while he received medical attention on the field. He was then taken by ambulance to Bayside Hospital where he remains.

The Piranhas were then down to ten men after losing midfielder Daniel Alvarez to a hamstring injury in the 13th minute and Charles Nweke to an ankle injury in the 11th minute. Carolina took advantage of the loss of Edwards when Sheanon Williams found the back of the net with an assist by Arie Muniz putting the game out of reach.

bWebd hit the post and then webd hit the crossbar,b said Piranhasb head coach Jon Hall. bI think our teambs performance was outstanding and we certainly had our opportunities. We just lacked fitness in the back and a sharp blade up front. b

Hall now has the daunting task of putting his team back together for a six-game road stretch that starts at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20 at Reading (PA). That match will be followed by games May 23 at Northern Virginia, May 25 at Virginia Legacy, May 30 at Carolina, June 4 at Virginia Legacy and June 6 at Fredericksburg. The team returns home Saturday, June 12 for another doubleheader with the W-League team at Virginia Wesleyan again against the Virginia Legacy.

Schedule Note:

The May 25 match with Virginia Legacy will be the makeup for the Piranhasb season opener on May 9 that was postponed due to weather and field conditions. The match is being played in Williamsburg because there was no available venue in southside Hampton Roads that fit either teambs existing schedule. The match had to be made up by May 25 due to Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup qualifying deadlines.

Watch out for the annoying band that will sit behind your team bench and play samba music all night long.
