HARRISBURG, PA -- Mo Oduor scored the game’s lone goal in the 37th minute and goalkeeper Bryan Hill recorded his second straight shutout as the Harrisburg City Islanders defeated the arch rival Pittsburgh Riverhounds 1-0 at a cold and rainy Skyline Sports Complex on Saturday night.

Oduor, wearing the captain’s armband in Derek Potteiger’s absence, accounted for Harrisburg’s score late in the first half, when the powerful central midfielder muscled his way through several Riverhounds defenders, forced a turnover, and coolly slipped a left-footed shot past losing keeper Chris Robinson, thrilling the enthusiastic crowd that braved the weather.

Oduor’s goal came shortly after Robinson came up big for Pittsburgh, batting away a David Schofield penalty kick in the 26th minute.

In many ways, the latest installment in the cross-state rivalry picked up right where it left off last year. Just as in the first leg of last season’s playoff series between the clubs on August 21, a thunderstorm loomed over the Complex. And just as in all four Harrisburg-Pittsburgh games a year ago, there was plenty of hard tackling and more than a few heated exchanges — a total of five cautions were issued, and Riverhounds Head Coach Ricardo Iribarren was ejected in the 66th minute.

Thanks to a solid team effort, the City Islanders (1-0-1, four points) held Pittsburgh’s explosive offense largely in check, and goalkeeper Bryan Hill was firmly in control as Harrisburg recorded its second clean sheet in as many games.

The bulk of the Riverhounds’ chances came after adopting an attacking posture in the second half, including a 53rd-minute chance for David Flavius, who found himself open in the goalmouth thanks to a John Liersemann cross. Flavius hit it high.

Notes: The game was delayed for roughly 45 minutes due to the late afternoon thunderstorm… Harrisburg heads south for a two-game road trip this weekend, traveling to Wilmington on Friday, April 29, and Charlotte on Saturday, April 30. Both games kick off at 7:30 p.m….The City Islanders return home on Saturday, May 7, to face Charlotte at 7:05 p.m…. Former Penn State star Chad Severs made his City Islanders debut in the 55th minute, replacing starting forward Henry Mensah.
