With David Bascome, Mike Feniger, Mike Henning, Derek Potteiger and Pete Shellenberger already signed, the City Islanders have in place mobile players with experience who can play up top, in the midfield or on the defensive flanks.

Feniger, Henning and Shellenberger played for the A-League's Hershey Wildcats. Potteiger spent two seasons with the A-League's Pittsburgh Riverhounds before that franchise dropped to the PSL.

Former Harrisburg Heat star Bascome is a regular with the Bermuda National Team.

Since Bascome plays for the Major Indoor Soccer League's Baltimore Blast, he will not report until that season concludes. Same for former Heat standout Matt Tanzini, a fleet-footed flank midfielder/back who is playing in Kansas City.

Plus, Tanzini's deal cannot be finalized until a loan agreement is struck with the MISL.

While Tanzini's situation might be lumped among the City Islanders' uncertainties, Becher likely will spend the next month sifting through wannabes and scouring the waiver wire for keepers and central defenders. Right now, those empty positions are prime concerns.

What he does have is 30-35 bodies, some from the tryouts Becher conducted in January at LANCO Fieldhouse and last weekend at Harrisburg High School. Others have ties to the Wildcats or Heat, midstate franchises that folded within the past three years, or carry recommendations.

Former Heat players Kyle Swords and Ian Carter, as well as ex-Wildcats J.T. Dorsey, Roger Kennedy and Aleks Radovic, are expected in camp. Swords, who also played for Hershey, and Radovic are believed close to agreements.

A half-dozen former midstate high school standouts also are trying to land jobs, including Chris Ackley (Carlisle), Steve Fisher (Hershey), Chris Fulton (C.D. East), Chris Hammacher (Cedar Cliff), John Lapore (Cedar Cliff) and Jeremy Olsen (Middletown).

Local college products from Elizabethtown, Messiah and York also will be trying to land spots on a Harrisburg roster that can carry 26 players max. While PSL clubs must dress at least 14 players, as many as 18 may be in uniform. That's a certainty.

Perspiring profusely as assistant coach Mark Pulisic put several dozen Harrisburg City Islander wannabes through conditioning drills yesterday afternoon, Ian Carter immediately reached for a towel and water bottle whenever a quick breather arrived. He welcomed the break.
