A Regional Exploratory Committee will investigate the viability of bringing a minor league soccer franchise to the Mohawk Valley by 2010. An initial organizational meeting is scheduled for Monday September 29 at 7PM at Thurston's Restaurant in Frankfort, NY. A press release next week will announce this meeting to media in Onondaga, Madison, Oneida and Herkimer Counties. Any media or soccer contacts that any of you have in Montgomery, Fulton or Albany counties would be helpful.

For those of us who are "geographically challenged", can you give a point of reference as to where this area is?! Thanks -

Utica is about 40 miles east of Syracuse. Over the past 30 years they have been home to 'A' minor league baseball and there has usually been a minor league hockey team playing in either the top level or second tier. There are a couple of small colleges in the area that compete in Div II/III. If I recall Herkimer CC was a Div III National Soccer Champ a few years back.

Economiclly the town is a mess. The mass exodus of jobs back in the late 60's and early 70's has never been filled. I grew up very close to there and I'll bet 60% of my High School class moved away.

Thanks for the location info, Rutger. From your description, and what little I know, this sure does not seem like the type of market that is going to be able to sustain even a lower division USL 2nd Division team (please don't use the term "minor league"!)....the term "centrally isolated" comes to mind?!

With the USL PDL new franchise rate now apparently doubling in price, the NPSL was the only way to go with this idea. While Utica might be in an economic downturn at the moment, what part of this great country isn't currently being effected by the economy? Utica has a rabid base of soccer supporters that likely will make this happen. As far as using the term "minor-league soccer", I'm not sure why you're conveying that is a negative term. I looked at both Binghamton and Oneonta as possibilities and only the folks in Utica jumped at the prospects. We shall see.

"While Utica might be in an economic downturn at the moment, what part of this great country isn't currently being effected by the economy?"

This economic downturn for Utica has been on going for about 40 years. In that time the rest of our country has seen some pretty good years. Nearly all has bypassed CNY. Being from the area I always wish for a turnaround, but I don't think It will happen anytime soon.

I'm also not so sure there is a rabid support of soccer in the area. How was the attendance for the short lived SYR team? I wouldn't expect numbers of the same magnitude in Utica. I also wouldn't expect too many of those fans traveling to Utica to see a game. It may only be about 50 miles, but in CNY that is farther than most people will drive to do things.

Utica has indeed seen some tough times. The NJ Devils used to house their minor league team in the city and it's also seen a few other minor league teams come and go. If I had the money, I'd move south set something up in Binghamton. The mighty "B" has done really well in supporting it's teams... great little city with a decent economy and population... plus u have Elmira and Ithica to work off of.

Thanks Andre: I've gotten absolutely no cooperation from either the City of Binghamton or the Director of Economic Development for Broome County. The Directors for all of the local youth soccer clubs have not responded to either emails or phone calls. I can't even get the SBDC located at Binghamton University to return my emails. The Soccer Coach for Binghamton University seemed interested but hasn't followed up with me. While Binghamton might in fact be a better overall choice, the folks in Utica seem to have a passion for trying to make this project work. Since the Balkan war, Utica has a very strong ethnic population that with proper marketing likely would support the franchise. And Rutger, please don't be fooled by the inflated attendance figures of the Syracuse Salty Dogs, most of that were freebies. While I'm not against the idea of promotional freebies, eventually the club must either stand on its own or not. And the battle that they had with the Syracuse Chiefs baseball team eventually killed them off. There is no such competition in Utica.

A MINOR LEAGUE SOCCER FRANCHISE FOR THE MOHAWK VALLEY?

Anyone in the Mohawk Valley with an interest in the sport of Soccer is strongly encouraged to attend an informational meeting taking place Monday, September 29, 2008 at 7:00PM at Thurston’s Restaurant in Frankfort, New York.

It has been suggested the new team, to reflect the geography and spirit of the entire region, would be called Mohawk Valley United SC. “The investors are ready and willing to make the commitment. The key question is whether or not this is a development the greater soccer community in the Mohawk Valley desires and will support. This is the purpose of the discussion to take place at the informational meeting” stated Foote. “It is the goal of the investors that this franchise would truly belong to the whole soccer community” he added.

A second informational meeting is planned for Monday October 27, 2008 at 7:00PM at the same location. Anyone seeking further information is encouraged to telephone Mr. Foote directly at 315-736-4378 or contact him by email at allandfoote@aol.com .

COMMUNITY HEARS OF PLAN TO BRING MINOR LEAGUE SOCCER FRANCHISE TO THE MOHAWK VALLEY

A meeting of local soccer enthusiasts took place at Thurston’s Restaurant in Frankfort, New York on Monday evening, September 29, 2008. Local resident, Allan D. Foote of Whitesboro, New York, representing the potential investor group, discussed the possibility of bringing a National Premier Soccer League franchise to the Mohawk Valley by the year 2010.

It has been suggested the new team, to reflect the geography and spirit of the entire region, would be called Mohawk Valley United SC. “The investors are ready and willing to make the commitment and they are very encouraged by the positive response so far by the local soccer community.” stated Foote. “It is the goal of the investors that this franchise would truly belong to the whole soccer community” he added.

"At this second meeting, a proposed table of organization for the franchise and year one budget will be discussed."

a ONE year budget ???!!! ....I'm sorry to say this, but if this is their thinking at the start, then this is doomed to fail. It has already happened too often in the past where owners/investors start a team, things don't start the way they want or need, the team doesn' make or loses too much money in the first or second year and the owners close shop. (the USISL/USL history is littered with such teams).

ANY business needs at least a three-year, and preferably a five-year plan when getting started to get over the start-up costs and learning curve.

Mr. Stone Cold: Thanks for the interest in what we're trying to do. You should take a drive up with me and meet some of the folks who are involved, you might be duly impressed with their passion for this project. Anyway I've gone ahead and fully committed and I'm prepared to suffer the associated losses for at least 3-5 years. Since FC Queen City playing in Buffalo was nearly at break-even in year one, I don't think that being in the black by year 5 is asking too much. Hope that helps with your confidence.

MS47 - please don't get me wrong. I sincerely hope that the team is a HUGE sucess. It just scared me to read about a one-year plan after seeing so many teams go down in flames after their first or second season.

From what I've read, the NPSL does seem to be a less expensive league to play in (since it is also amateur), especially if you have enough teams in a region to keep your travel costs down to just bus trips (no flying!)

Seems like you know what you are getting in to, so you won't be facing those tough decisions after year 1 or 2. If you can do so well as to be close to break-even after that time it would be great! Good Luck and keep posting your progress here to update everyone.

Hope you are successful. I played for the Utica Sal Caruso club (ethnic italian team)- I was one of 3 non-italians on the roster - in the mid 70's - arguably the top team in the area - when I was attending grad school @ the 'cuse. Good Luck!

Thanks Viking: It's looking like that we might be calling HCCC our home pitch...stay tuned. And yes Mr. Stone Cold the NPSL makes it relatively easy to sign up and you're not risking personal bankruptcy in the process.

MINOR LEAGUE SOCCER IS COMING TO THE MOHAWK VALLEY!

Based upon the positive response from many local soccer enthusiasts, who met twice in October 2008 at informational meetings, local resident, Allan D. Foote of Whitesboro, New York, representing the Investor Group, today announced that a new soccer club is forming in the Mohawk Valley and that an application has been made to enter the National Premier Soccer League Eastern Conference, with intentions to compete commencing with the 2010 season. To reflect the geography and spirit of the entire region, the soccer club is called Mohawk Valley United SC. The Club motto will be: United We Stand. Update on Meeting of 10/27/08
1. It was announced that the Investor Group has made application to the National Premier Soccer League for entry into the league to commence play in the year 2010 under the name of Mohawk Valley United SC. A formal announcement to the media will be made this Saturday at 11:30AM in front of Wehrum Stadium at HCCC. An agreement in priniciple has been reached with HCCC to utilize Wehrum Stadium, the premier soccer stadium in the Mohawk Valley as our home field facility. A special thanks to Don Dutcher, AD at HCCC for working closely with us on this project. $35,000 has been pledged by the Investor Group in 2008-2010.
2. It was suggested that the slate of activities for the remainder of 2008-2009 would include in this order:
A. Complete Table of Organization (see attached)- To date, the following positions have been filled: General Manager- Allan Foote; Director of Facilities- HCCC; Director of Development- Michele Fornino; Director of Security- HCCC; Referee Coordinator- Ed Kobos; Public Address Announcer- HCCC. Thanks to the HCCC personnel to be announced later and Mike and Ed for signing on! For the rest of the group- think about where you may be able to contribute and let's talk about it!
B. Develop business plan with the assistance of Sam Russo of the SBDC at SUNYIT to file as a 501C3 not-for-profit organization.
C. Secure two exclusive sponsors each for 2009 and 2010. (see attached offer) It was agreed that the person or organization delivering a $25,000 exclusive sponsor would be credited individually with one Investor Group share valued at $2,500. One of these sponsors could be an auto dealer. (see attached letter)
D. Sponsor with Rising Stars Soccer Club a College Indoor Soccer Cup to be held in April. Invite at least the 12 colleges in our immediate region. The tournament would be open to college level or alumni players. The Cup could serve as a modest fundraiser for Rising Stars SC and Mohawk Valley United SC and as a scouting and recruitment tool.
E. Develop pre-season roster of at least 50 players and hold invitational try-outs April-May. Select 20 players for active roster in 2009 and 20 players for reserve roster.
F. Secure Radio/TV Contracts
G. Organize Youth Academies with Local Clubs and Colleges, if funds available
H.. Organize Player Scholarship Programs, if funds available
I. Acquire transport vehicles, if auto dealer sponsor secured
J. Play a three game exhibition season May-July- May:Home vs HCCC Alumni? June: Away vs Watertown? July: Home vs CNYSSL All-Stars?
K. Prepare for entry in the National Premier Soccer League in 2010
3. Other Exciting News:
A. In the Contest to pick our Club Colors, Gold & Black is leading by a wide margin, with White & Black a close second for our second uniform set. It was suggested that perhaps an exclusive sponsor could have some input into helping select the colors for the second uniform set.
B. Mike Evke has offered to work with his company graphic designer on a club logo, which would be a European style crest incorporating the Club colors of Gold, Black & White. The crest would contain our Club name: Mohawk Valley United SC and perhaps our Club motto: United We Stand. Perhaps Mike will have something to share with us on 11/23/08?
C. Of course, we also now have an official Club anthem as well: United We Stand by the group Brotherhood of Man.

NEXT MEETING IS SUNDAY 11/23/08 AT 6:30PM AT THE RISING STARS SOCCER CLUB INDOOR COMPLEX CONFERENCE ROOM IN WESTMORELAND- This will likely be the last meeting of the year- please make every effort to attend.

Regards,

Men's soccer ranked No. 20 in the nation in home attendance for 2008 season

VESTAL, N.Y.-- For the second year in a row, the Binghamton men's soccer team was ranked among the NCAA Division I leaders in terms of average home attendance. During the 2008 campaign, the squad averaged 1,115 fans per game, which was No. 20 in the nation.

"What a great accomplishment to be ranked in the top 20 for home attendance," head coach Paul Marco said. "The credit goes to the fans, parents and alumni for their support and a big thank you goes to all of the students who came out and were singing and chanting every game. We have one of the best--if not the best--facilities in the conference (the Bearcats Sports Complex) which has definitely helped us."

Binghamton had seven home games this past season, including an America East quarterfinal game against New Hampshire on Nov. 8. Against Vermont on Oct. 18, a sellout crowd of 2,534 fans watched the Bearcats beat defending America East champion Vermont 1-0. That game was also aired in the Binghamton area by Time Warner Sports.

In 2007, Binghamton ranked No. 21 in the nation with 1,299 fans per game. Included among the eight home dates, however, were both the America East semifinal and championship game which drew a combined total of over 3,000 fans.

Since the Bearcats Sports Complex opened in 2007, the men's soccer program has gone 14-1-0. This includes a perfect 12-0-0 mark in regular-season contests.
