FC Fredericksburg Lady Gunners Vs. Washington Freedom Gunners Open Home Season Against Defending Champions
FREDERICKSBURG, VA. - (Thursday, May 22nd, 2008) – The Fredericksburg Lady Gunners begin their second season of play this Saturday, May 24th, against the defending W-League Champion Washington Freedom. The game will be played at the Fredericksburg Academy Athletic Complex, with a kickoff scheduled for 5:30 PM. The Freedom are 1-0 in league play after defeating the Long Island Rough Riders 3-1 back on May 10th.
Players to Watch:
Lady Gunners: Goalkeeper Amanda Barasha is the starter for Wake Forest University and recently returned from participating in the U-20 U.S. National Team Camp in Los Angeles. Omolyn Davis is a regular with Jamaican National Team and will be counted on to solidify the Gunners’ midfield. Twins Maria and Marissa Mohammed (defender and forward, respectively) will be two of the team’s leaders on the field and in the locker room for the 2008 campaign.
Freedom: Kele Golebiowski is a veteran of the former WUSA and has played numerous times for the Australian National Team. Christie Welsh is another U.S. and WUSA player who scored 2 goals in the team’s opening-season 3-1 win over the Long Island Rough Riders. Lori Lindsay added assists on 2 of the three goals in that game, and Emily Janss added another.
The W-League Lady Gunners compete in the Northeast Division, which contains the Washington Freedom, Boston Renegades, Jersey Sky Blue, Long Island Rough Riders, Connecticut Passion, New York Magic, New Jersey Wildcats, and the Northern Virginia Majestics. Players have the ability to compete in the W-League throughout the summer months in a professionalized setting while maintaining their collegiate eligibility. The league is the proving ground for players that aspire to reach the highest-levels of the game, while providing affordable family entertainment within their city.
