Gunners Still Alive In Playoff Hunt

(Fredericksburg, Va) - The FC Fredericksburg Gunners kept their playoff hopes alive by coming back with a 4-1 dismantling of the Hamton Roads Piranhas just a day after losing a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to division-leading Reading. Cristian Neagu was the hero of the weekend for the Gunners by scoring both goals in the Reading loss and following that up with a masterful 1 goal, 2 assist performance on Saturday.

The Gunners showed a tremendous amount of heart and composure against the Piranhas, as the team realized their playoff lives were at stake.

David Sanford got the Gunners on the scoreboard in the 25th minute after goalkeeper Sean Paradise’s clearance sailed over the heads of the HR defense. Sanford raced to the ball, reached it before the goalie and defender, and calmly slotted it into the side netting to give the Gunners the lead. The Gunners maintained pressure for the rest of the half but were unable to convert additional chances.

Fredericksburg doubled their lead in the 57th minute, with Sanford again playing a big role in the goal. After beating his defender to the endline, he sent in a perfect cross that player/coach Neagu was able to get his foot on. Steve Danbusky, the Piranhas defender on the play, tried to keep the ball out of the net but was unable to do so. Neagu was credited with the goal.

Neagu also had a hand in assisting on the final 2 goals, the first in the 67th minute on a brilliant give and go to Ryan Johnson that originated at midfield. Johnson started a counterattack deep in his own end by bringing the ball to midfield, dishing it off to Neagu, who calmly returned a perfect ball to Johnson, who had gotten behind the Piranhas defense. "RJ" then outraced everyone to the ball and shot it into the side panel for a 3-0 Gunners lead.

After McKenzie Plank scored for Hampton Roads in the 83rd minute, the Gunners went back to a 3-goal lead as Neagu fed Kyle McGinsey with another perfect pass for the newcomer to finish with ease.

"I think today showed our depth on this team," said Neagu after the match. "We came back from a tough loss and showed a lot of heart, which is what makes this team and these players special."

Neagu specifically added that he was proud of the defensive effort of his back four defenders in Cameron McCarthy, Tennant McVea, Henry Kalungi, and Jonathan Bownes.

The win puts the Gunners at 8-6 and keeps them alive for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, with their final 2 games coming up against Westchester and Brooklyn.

All joking to one side, none of the Va PDL teams have really excelled this season, your record being the best, albiet with a walk over win.

Has your loss of form coincided with the injury to your Bosnian striker ?

He impressed me in the first game down there.

Maybe a poll on what went wrong is in order.
