With 15 minutes to go in regulation, Pats came from a one-goal deficit to score twice (75th and 89th).
Vancouver opened the scoring at the 30th when they
capitalized on a Pats defensive mistake. Pats defense failed to clear a ball at the heart of the penalty box and saw a Whitecap player put a shot on goal as a loose ball rolled his way.
Patriots' reaction never really came, playing overcautiously for the remainder of the first half and most of the second. Very boring soccer.
Vancouver was quite content to sit on the early lead, staying well organized on defense.
Pats were unable to open up the game. It looked like this goal would stand.
However, midfielder Jose Lomeli fed a nice ball in open space down the right side to Pats newcomer Manuel Frias. Frias ran on to it, did a quick 180 and got off a hard low shot to the far post which found the side netting. The game was tied.
This goal sparked up the tame Pats offense. On an ensuing Pats corner kick, Vancouver cleared the original kick. Ball dropped at the feet of Dominic Schell on the right side of the field. He immediately recentered the ball and found center defender DosSantos who headed it in for the game winner.
Patriots are still slow getting into their games. They let opponents score on them first 3 or 4 times this season. This complicates things greatly when the visitors go into a defensive shell and makes it very difficult to come back.
I was glad to see that Pats have finally decided not to send in high crosses. Instead, they keep the ball on the ground and try quick short wall passes to penetrate down the center. This is a big improvement.
I wish them good luck on the road this upcoming weekend (Portland and Calgary, I think). Lets see whether they can get some points playing away for a change...
