RDA close to getting a goal. He was knocked down, however.

Corner kick for the Battery.

Let's see:

The Pat's are coming home from this roadtrip with:
1.) 6 more goals scored against them
2.) 3 players who will serve suspensions
3.) No U.S. Open Cup berth
Finally..
4.) The realization that we are in for the same crap as last year.

Chuwy, you are a true fan and deserve better than this. If I ever meet you I'll buy you a beer.

One thought is that the Southeast is very, very strong this year. Maybe even MLS level but without the really big stars.

Honestly I don't think El Paso is as bad as all that. They knock the ball about nicely, masters of playing the "simple ball", maintaining at least their share of possession time, they badly - badly need someone who can hold the ball up top/up forward - long enuff to palm it off to a shooter. Get such a guy & they could be a challenge for any of the better teams. The foul outside the box was the proper thing to do IMO, Mac would have almost certainly scored. Dusty made a hell of a save on the direct. Watson's goal was unstoppable, that was a goal at any level. RDA's goal was ALL finesse. Despite the 3-Nil win we did NOT play our best soccer, I credit that to unavoidable early season lineup changes more than anything, we'll be fine & I wish El Paso better luck & a good forward.

Dear Patriots' front office,

Time to swallow your pride. Please get us a new forward. It's time you guys bring in a big, strong forward who will be able to help the Pat's salvage what is fast becoming another crap season. Stop being cheap. You are not going to find this player south of the border.

Your biggest fan,

During the first half, the Patriots looked to be the better side. Very composed and moved the ball around nicely. The players seem to have great individual skill. The biggest weakness I see is a certain degree of physical toughness. The A-League style of play tends to be on the physical side. The Battery were clearly stronger physically and were able to manhandle the Patriots. The Pats need a couple of intimidating guys in midfield and upfront who can take on the opposition and penetrate into the box. Overall, I was impressed with the Patriots style of play. If I was a Pats fan I'd rather see wins, but ya'll play a nice style of football. The Battery play the long ball too much. The Battery and Patriots will meet again later on in the summer (this time in sunny El Paso).

In regards to the red card, I thought it was a little unjustified. Mac had broken free and had a chance to chip the keeper, but instead decided to dribble into the box. He got tackled right at the edge of the box by the Pats defender. Nothing malicious. In a way, even the slightest of nudges would have brought Mac down. He should have taken a shot before the two Pats defenders closed him down. That was my view of the situation from the East Stand.

Nice to see some fans being kind in an otherwise ugly situation. I think this all leads up to beating that poor, dead horse -- El Paso needs some size up front. Heck, they probably need size everywhere. Defense has been decent, but now I think the boys are starting to hang their heads, and that's not good at all.

The points have been made that the Pats do have some decent individual talent, but without someone to punch it in, I think some of the Atlanta posters in the other thread were correct in that El Paso was playing with the wagons in a circle, hoping (beyond hope) for a cheap goal on a counter. Too much speed and size in today's A-League.

I've said it before and I'll say it again -- the American game has passed this team by. It's been a downhill ride for El Paso since the 1995 Open Cup Finals, and somebody needs to wake up to find some guys from THIS country who can be difference makers. Dominic Schell is a start, actually, but he's apparently not a true forward and he's not a big guy and he doesn't have anybody around him to help.

Interesting that Dominic apparently really likes El Paso. Cervantes has spent a LOT of money to show he's serious, creating the practice complex complete with showers, dressing room, weight equipment and regulation-size field. I think it shows that players who might come in from around the country can like and possibly would like El Paso. I also think the question is, Does El Paso want them?

I think the answer -- so far -- is Not much. They want that Latin team with a Latin style -- which hasn't won crap since 1995.

The focus on local players is good -- Freddy Juarez, Mike Griego, Mark Rowland, Kirk Wilson, Fred Estrada and Carlos Martinez have all proven they can play -- but those brought in to help, especially playmakers and goal scorers, might help more if they were familiar with the American game. They might care more, too.

As for coach Tita, I think he's trying to play to his strengths -- defense, individual style and physical condition. But the mental condition is what matters most now, and that ain't good.

I like to watch the Latin style of play, but it is really hard to play this way in the A-League with narrow, bumpy fields and a general physical style of play employed by most teams. I guess a team could play and win using a Latin style, but you would have to the right kind of players...

With the Battery's nice wide field of perfect grass, your style looked right at home and your players were very comfortable. You had your share of possession. As other's have mentioned, it was the final 1/3 that did you in. And we've had our own problems in that area also. And last night wasn't much better; 2 goals from defenders and a cheesy chip by RDA. And as far as fitness, your boys hung in tough. I kept waiting for them to wilt, it never happened, even after going a man down. Well done.

Thanks much.

One of the biggest things I like about Tita is he has absolutely insisted his players be in shape. They practice together, eat together and hang around a lot with each other. They can be very patient, but the lid -- as many correctly predicted, unfortunately -- is starting to come off.

The Pats just need "O" in the front, instead of in the back plastered on poor Jesse Llamas' face as he watches the balls fly by.

Yes, it sure is nice to hear some comforting remarks from our opposition, instead of a bunch of b.s. taunting. Thanks. smile

Being from south central Texas for my entire soccer life and raising a kid from 5 years to 19 here, I know "Latin" players can play but that the "Latin Game" isn't always the way to go and that physical size does matter in more ways than the one which is close to Chuwy's heart.

Even "small" Latin players can contribute if they are playing on a team that has a good mix of players, my son's very successful college team had a small kid from Belize who was decent when surrounded by average to big players. But he was intimidated fairly easily, if memory serves, when confronted with a overall huge team, say like Lindsey Wilson or Life or Mobile.

And looks at MLS, there are many "small" Latin players there who are doing well, but they, again, are in a mix of medium to large players who give out as much as they are given.

Possession is one thing, but one can't win games unless you give up possession...into the net.
