With two PDL teams in Utah developing players, and a relatively well attended MLS team aren't we ready to have a USL Division 2 club in Utah? Salt Lake Metro, Utah County, Davis County, maybe even Logan or St. George? Could a Sandy stadium for RSL be more attractive if it were occupied by two teams - assuring an event every week all summer long? How about a W-League team - and whatever happened to the Spiders?

In talking to the league office they are hoping for at least four teams out west before coming back. Northern California, Utah - where we at in Las Vegas, Arizona (Phoenix or Tucson), Albuquerque, El Paso, San Antonio, Austin, Colorado (Denver or Colorado Springs), Southern California (LA, San Diego, etc...). All should have a large enough base of quality players to allow for some competitive teams - and little professional soccer competition (other than the MLS is Denver, Real Salt Lake the Galaxy and Chivas USA, Victory). Denver is getting the new stadium - which once again would be more successful with a second team - even knowing it would only draw a fraction of the "big" club - but gives hard cores a game a week. With proper marketing, there could be a separate division (or league?) out west. To reduce costs how about separate seasons - followed by a Championship home and home East vs. West series. That would be a lot more exciting than the current set up.
Just a dream, but when this is in place we become a better soccer nation. Needed - fan support, some initial investors for each team. There are plenty of young people with the dream to play and I believe the ability if given the chance to develop themselves. Now they play PDL a few years and then unless they clearly sparkle and go foreign, MLS, Div 1, or move East for Div 2 - they move on to a different career and might play adult league soccer in their spare time. Without the ability to train and focus, they may never know how good they could have been.

I would discount BYU, since they are a school. I think they would be ineligable for pro status.

As a team advancing from PDL to Div 2, I would agree, but between the Ogden Outlaw and BYU PDL players over the years you could form a decent Div. 2 team.

You really can't talk about having only a few D2 teams "out west" because the travel would financially destroy these franchises. Look back at when there were 3 teams in D2 playing a mixed pro/PDL schedule (San Diego, California and Utah). All these teams are gone.
This will only work if you have an entire Western Division. For the 2nd Division 20-game schedule, I think that it would require at LEAST six regionally close teams (playing each other 4 times apiece). Then the two divisional winners (East/West) could play for a true 2nd Division Championship!

So dream team 6 West teams - San Diego, Las Vegas, Utah, Phoenix, Northern California, Albuquerque. Any investors want to step up and make this a reality? Just need a little less than a half million or so a year.

San Diego, California and Utah were the entire Western Division. Unfortunately, it did not work because, as you also stated, more teams were needed. It was the smallest Division in the league at that time. As I recall, Utah attracted the most fans in that part of the league.
